the moon hung in the sky like an old light bulb on a fragile string, sitting there, unmoving, shining a light that was dim and hardly useful. but it sat there, rather stubbornly, nonetheless; refusing to brighten or die. it watched over the city night after night, watching the trials and tribulations of those who inhabit it. watching as a young man was mugged on his way to the convenience store, as another cheated on his girlfriend. it saw everything that went on - the best things, like a new set of twins being born at the general hospital to overjoyed parents who had been trying for years, and.. of course, the worst: a man's family being murdered over a debt, just as he had finally managed to get the money to repay it. quite sad to think about, really - the differences between people's lives. the nicest man you'd ever met could have broken into your house last night, for all you know, and the happiest one could be beating his kids - that golden crescent in the sky had seen it all. and, in this case, the most innocent of girls could quite possibly have a not-so-innocent hobby. hell, if you know.
it was eleven o'clock and the day had finally subsided. while most people who dwelt in a small community or countryside would be tucked into their beds, sweating away, the ones in the city acted in a slightly different manner. the street was absolutely filled with people, ones of every age and size. a few young girls and their mothers walked around curiously, eyes wide at finding themselves in the seediest part of town. businessmen looked around nervously, as if they were trying to hide something. a few women stood on the side of the street, trying to look like they weren't up to anything; while their fishnets told a different story. and how did she, a teenage girl, find herself within this showcase of urban chaos?
funny story. dakota weaved in between people, turning her shoulders swiftly so as to avoid contact. a man was chasing after her, his face purple with rage. she moved as quickly as her legs would take her. long auburn hair trailed past her. oh god oh god, i'm so fucked! she thought, her brow furrowed and her lips formed into a dissatisfied grin. its not like it was her fault, now was it? he was the one stupid enough to look away, and to have his wallet visibly hanging out of his back pocket, ever enchantingly. he only had twenty bucks, anyhow! the girl turned her head back, not slowing to do so. he was gaining, although she was running at full speed. she tried to trick him by turning back, but he was pretty fast for a man in his late forties.
she struggled to run faster, feeling her adrenaline racing through her veins. he was slowing down - out of breath. "yesss!" she hissed to herself, and turned into an alley. she almost fell over, but caught herself and leaned on the side of the wall, heart beating rapidly. she couldn't help but feel a bit giddy - the man had gave a good chase, and she'd still been victorious. she whipped out what she'd managed to get that night - $127 and an old, crumpled picture of farrah fawcett. dakota sighed, plopped herself on the ground - unable to keep a triumphant smile from playing on her lips. REASONS LIKE SEASONS, THEY CONSTANTLY CHANGE<< and the seasons of last year
-●-●-●-●-●-●-●-●-●-●-●-●-●- quicker, the boy thought to himself, forcing himself to walk faster down the semi-crowded sidewalk. he was practically jogging, trying his best not to bump into someone or even make eye contact with anyone. the boy's dark brown eyes were glued to the cement he walked on, slightly wide and bloodshot. quicker, he thought again, though he didn't speed up his pace. swerving in and out of people, he continued to pray that no one slowed him down and that he'd quickly get out of that part of town. he failed, however, when he felt something hit his left shoulder. terrified, the eighteen year old quickly glanced up and to his left, his dark eyes widening even more. the man beside him had dark tan skin and a black beard; atop his hairless head sat a hat, turned sideways. a deep frown was set on the obviously older man's face, and his muscled arms were folded tightly across his chest. "o-oh, i'm sorry," the raven-haired boy stuttered out before darting off again, not waiting for any sort of reply from the other male.
it resumed - the swerving in and out of people on the cracked sidewalk. every few seconds, abel would look up again, hoping to prevent the previous accident from replaying. after all, there were plenty of people in town that would likely throw him up against a wall and punch his face in if he so much as barely tapped their shoulder. reminding himself of that fact, abel shivered involuntarily. goosebumps formed on his arms, though not really from the cold, late night air. from sheer terror.
abel had always hated this part of town - always. but one never really got to choose where they would grow up, did they? the black-haired boy had lived in fear most of his life, staying locked up within his own home as much as possible. his neighbors weren't trustworthy, nor were his 'friends'. no one could be trusted in his town, as far as abel was concerned. the only people who existed were the ones who harmed and the ones harmed. there was no inbetween. sure, there were the people who tried to remain unharmed - but of course, that would never last.
another shiver ran down the boy's spine and he gripped the bottom of his old, plain white t-shirt tightly out of habit. really, he shouldn't have come outside so late - it was always worse at nighttime. glancing around his surroundings again, abel saw a group of girls a few meters away from him. all three had brunette hair and wore exceptionally revealing clothing and enough makeup for a clown. disgusted, abel's nose wrinkled up and he looked away, continuing his brisk walk down the sidewalk.
he noticed an alley after a few more seconds, placed inbetween two seemingly abandoned buildings. stopping in his tracks, the eighteen year old boy glanced down the alleyway, gulping. it appeared to be empty, give a few dumpsters and trashbags here and there. still, abel knew better than to wander into alleyways; they were always the worse. but even so, the alley would get abel to the store he had to get to a lot quicker than his normal route.. so would it be worth risking it? the boy contemplated the pros and cons for a moment before biting down on his bottom lip and gulping again. silently, he started to walk down the alley, having a sinking feeling that he'd just made a terrible decision.
and then he saw the person. on the ground, up against a brick wall, was a small figure that abel had originally thought was a trashbag. instantly, the boy's heart started racing and he quit walking, just staring at the person. but then he realized it was a girl; and even in the terrible darkness of the night, abel could tell that she wasn't too old. heart still beating faster than normal, the boy took a step towards her, half curious as to what she was doing just sitting in an alleyway. no, you're an idiot, abel! the raven-haired boy thought to himself, stopping his feet from moving again. just keep on walking and get out of here, now!
but the boy didn't listen to what his mind told him to do. he was a curious person, and though abel knew 'curiosity killed the cat', he was especially interested in that one girl for a reason he didn't know. extremely cautiously, he took another few steps towards the small figure, but stopped when he'd left a few feet between them. "hello?" he called softly, barely loud enough for even himself to hear.

dakota closed her green eyes and exhaled sharply. relief flooded through her. what if that guy had actually caught her? she could have easily been arrested just then; and lord knows that there was no way she could get out of that. she could try to escape, but that would just add fuel to the fire - she'd be on posters, then. even if she cooperated, her mother wouldn't even consider picking her up. in fact, she wouldn't even answer the phone if she knew it was concerning her delinquent daughter. or.. what if he didn't even call the police, but instead decided to become some sort of vigilante? her imagination couldn't stop forming terrible scenes and headlines; she was incredibly lucky, she was well aware. the girl was frightened, but at the same time, enlightened. perhaps this was what she was craving. living so close to the edge that she was sure she would fall off and the rush of being chased beneath neon lights? she'd always scoffed at the thought of this sort of life; thinking that the ones who lived them were better off dead. now, she wasn't so sure.
"hello?"
her green eyes snapped open and she pushed herself to her feet in fright, legs aching but still willing to run if the situation called for it. heart racing, she raised her eyes to meet the face of the one who called softly - hoping that it wasn't the fat, unshaven face of the man she'd stolen from earlier. instead, it was a dark-haired boy, around her age. dakota's eyes were wide in surprise for a split second, but softened as she looked closely at him. he wasn't familiar in the least. blinking slowly, she replied with a greeting,"oh, uh.. hi," she said awkwardly, deciding to ignore the fact that she had almost had a heart attack at his sudden appearance. why was he here, anyway? a dark alley wasn't really the best place to be hanging out; unless you were a crackwhore or something. in fact, he looked pretty normal - but she was mostly wondering why he even bothered to talk to her. usually, you just walked right past someone you saw in an alley who was sitting in a corner smiling about something, even if it was a girl. actually, you'd probably quicken up your steps or even break into a full-blown sprint. maybe this was just her way of thinking? just then, she realized that she still had a hand full of bills in her left hand in full view. she whipped her hand behind her, secretly hoping that he wouldn't be freaked out. she didn't know why, exactly.. maybe because she hadn't had an actual conversation with someone that didn't include the phrase 'you thieving bitch'. she felt paper brush against her leg, like she'd dropped a bill or something - hopefully not the incriminating picture of a certain model from the 70s. "uhh.. uh," the teenage girl stammered, looking away.[/blockquote] [Agent:2]

REASONS LIKE SEASONS, THEY CONSTANTLY CHANGE<< and the seasons of last year
-●-●-●-●-●-●-●-●-●-●-●-●-●- you're so stupid, the boy thought to himself, having second thoughts. he shouldn't have stopped, really - he should've kept going, kept walking along on his way. then he could've gotten to the store quicker and then gone straight home, and it would've been over fairly fast. but no, abel was a curious person - he always had been. usually, he kept his curiosity at bay, knowing that it wasn't very smart to do things such as talk to strangers, especially in the place where he lived. but there was something about that girl -that he was sure he'd never even seen before- that piqued his interest. even so, abel couldn't fight off the thought that he'd done something terribly stupid.
abel watched the girl almost warily, and when she suddenly pushed herself to a standing position, the boy couldn't help but jump a step back. his dark eyes instantly widened more, and he half expected the girl to pull a gun on him or something. but when that didn't happen, abel calmed down a tad. he allowed his eyes to scan over her again, now that she was actually standing up. it was still hard to make out some of her features because of the darkness of the night, but abel squinted and looked her over anyway. no, he decided after a second, he'd never seen her before. but then again, the eighteen year old hardly paid attention to anyone who wasn't his close family - after all, no one could be trusted, right? so why get to know anyone?
and then abel's eyes narrowed more, his chocolate eyes locking on the shorter girl's face. what if she was one of them? the thought absolutely disgusted him and almost made him feel sorry for her, of all things. what if she was one of those poor girls who worked the corners every other night just to make cash? or what if she was some sort of drug dealer.. or addict? for all abel knew, she could've been to jail before or something; and quite frankly, abel didn't want to associate with any of those types of people, no matter their age or how innocent they looked on the outside. he scanned his eyes over her body again.. but he didn't get the whole 'hooker' vibe from her.
the raven-haired boy bit down on his bottom lip. he'd probably misjudged her - she could be a teenager just like him. just a normal kid, trying to get through life and make enough money to live. hell, for all abel knew, she could just be homeless and living on the streets, sleeping in alleys - that theory wouldn't be too unlikely, after all. not in this town.
"oh, uh.. hi," the tall boy simply nodded his head in response. abel noticed her hand move behind her back rather quickly, and he glanced at where the girl's hand had previously been. confusion splayed across his face, his eyebrows knitting together and his head tilting to the side. when abel's black hair fell in his eyes from doing so, he simply raised a hand and hurriedly swiped the stray hair out of the way.
he continued to stare at her arm for a moment, trying to see what she could possibly be hiding behind her back? oh, god, abel thought to himself. it's probably drugs or something. his judging was cut short, though, when he noticed something fall from behind the girl's back and land beside her leg. squinting, abel tried to figure out what it was. it didn't take him but a few seconds - after all, the dark green paper gave away what it was fairly quick.
without thinking all too much about what he was doing, abel stepped forward, quickly closing the space between him and the still-mystery girl. when he was only a foot or so away from her, he bent down and reached out almost cautiously before grabbing the worn, green bill. he grasped it tightly in his left hand before standing up again and looking down at the girl. "here," he murmured, offering out the money that he'd picked up. "i think you dropped this." a crooked, weak smile was spread across abel's lips, nervousness making his fingertips tremble slightly as he waited for the girl to take her money back.

dakota clenched her teeth anxiously. she shuffled her feet into the wet, grimy ground beneath them, staring at him with big eyes to see if he had noticed her blunder. she'd made all the effort to swiftly hide the wad of crash that she clenched within her hand, and, of course - she had screwed up on one minor little detail. it was always these small things that ruined her. races - she'd cross the end line just a second too late. skipping class - she'd just happen to turn the corner at the same time as her own teacher. her luck left much to be desired; it was a wonder how she managed to make a living on the streets. some day, she was sure that she would accidentally pickpocket some mob boss and she'd end up at the bottom of the river, with her ankles chained to a couple of cinder blocks. hopefully this guy wasn't another occurrence of her staggering misfortune. the girl's head was empty at this time, however, and she felt somehow compelled to give human interaction a chance.
she looked up at him curiously, questions swimming lazily about in her mind. who was he? what was he doing in an alleyway at eleven at night? he was looking at her with narrowed, chocolate-brown eyes, and she stared straight back; suddenly, feeling slightly embarrassed. when was the last time she'd spoken to someone, dakota mused while wearing a puzzled expression. and when was the last time that someone had actually been a guy? all of the ones who'd been at her school just kind of ignored her; probably thinking that she would knife them as soon as she got the chance. she was generally thought of as a bad seed, of sorts, and didn't have many friends. the friends that she did have weren't the best crowd to hang around with, and probably only talked to her because she could help them get cash.
it was a few moments before the auburn-haired girl noticed that he was reaching down towards the ground, just a few feet before her. she stepped back a little bit, but then moved back into her place when she realized that he was simply picking up what she'd dropped. fortunately, it was just a ten dollar bill. nothing too strange about that, right? there was no law against having money.
"i think you dropped this."
"yeah.. thanks,"
dakota said, taking it from his hand and flushing with bashfulness. the possibility that she was the only bad one was increasing. he was probably just a normal guy, and she was a girl who prowled the streets for money and thrills. "well, i'm dakota. didn't really expect to be running into anyone around here.." the girl said, grinning ineptly in response to his weak smile.[/blockquote][/blockquote] [Agent:2]

REASONS LIKE SEASONS, THEY CONSTANTLY CHANGE<< and the seasons of last year
-●-●-●-●-●-●-●-●-●-●-●-●-●- as soon as the auburn-haired girl took back the slightly ripped bill, abel dropped his hand to his side. the nervousness -and almost fearfulness- still resided within him, but he tried his best to hide it. after all, the girl hadn't attempted to hurt him yet. when abel had looked her over, she hadn't appeared to have had any weapons. but still, she could have been hiding them - maybe a knife in her pocket or a lighter of some sorts. then the dark-haired boy's wrinkled a tad in his own self-confusion. you're scared of her or something? his subconscious asked him. you're scared of a girl? biting down on his bottom lip, abel decided that, yeah, he was scared. just because the girl before him wasn't exactly muscly or huge didn't mean she was any less dangerous than a buff guy.
would it be smart to quickly go ahead and make an exit, then? just leave the girl and walk off without saying another word? abel, after pondering the idea for a moment, decided against it. there was still that unexplainable feeling that was drawing him towards the mysterious girl. he wanted to know about her - at least her name and whether or not she actually lived on the streets. he was so curious; was she his age? did she have a family that she lived with? why had she been sitting in an alleyway all by herself? the questions whirled and mingled within the eighteen year old's mind, and he soon realized that he still hadn't spoken after a minute.
he replayed in his mind what he'd heard the girl say a few seconds before. "yeah.. thanks. well, i'm dakota. didn't really expect to be running into anyone around here.." slowly, the raven-haired boy nodded, though the reaction was sort of delayed. his fringe fell into his chocolaty eyes again and he quickly swiped his hair out of the way with one hand. "dakota?" abel asked, testing the name out on his tongue. it wasn't exactly a common name, though not too.. out there. from what abel knew, if could be either a boy or s girl's name, though it seemed to fit the girl in front of him - from what he could see of her, anyway. "that's a cool name," he decided, his voice still soft as usual.
after another moment passed, the tall boy awkwardly reached out his left hand towards the girl, half expecting her to decline the handshake. "i'm abel," he murmured. his dark eyes that had been previously locked on dakota's face moved down to the girl's arm and onto her hand. his head tilted, and he stared at the ten dollar bill. abel couldn't stop the thought from rushing back to his mind that she might be one of them again. one of those horrid girls who obviously had no ounce of dignity or self respect. was that how she'd gotten the money? abel knew from experience that it wasn't too easy to get money in that part of town.. unless you did things the illegal way.
shut up, the boy finally told himself. after all, it was just a ten-dollar bill. it's not like it was two-hundred dollars or something.. now that would have made him extremely suspicious. brown eyes darting back up to dakota's face, he exhaled slowly before asking, "what were you doing?" his tone wasn't accusing nor apprehensive, simply questioning and interested. taking a few steps back, his terribly worn-out black converse thudding against the cement, abel stood in place before holding his arms out, gesturing to the long alleyway. "sitting down out here all by yourself, i mean," he clarified, dropping his arms back to his sides after a few seconds.

dakota shrugged uncomfortably, waiting for the strange boy to reply in a silence that was disturbed only by distant shouting and the shuffling of her own feet. she felt a bit on edge; not because she was afraid of him - but because he seemed rather uneasy, himself. was she frightening him? could it be that she was trapping him into a conversation he definitely didn't want to be in? the girl felt her heart drop, filling to the brim with anxiety. she wouldn't blame him if he was a bit put off.. this was an alleyway in the city. a city that was, in general, an awful place to live in. every kind of evil imaginable lurked here. not even within the confines of the brick buildings that lined the streets - but out in the open. everyday, the newspaper was filled with stories of the latest gunfight, or the next policeman who was being accused of corruption. it was good that he was at least a little bit fearful.. it meant that he wasn't stupid.
the teenage girl smiled weakly in response to his compliment. she watched him put his hand out, for a handshake, presumably. funny, shaking someone's hand in an alley. anyone passing by would think they were making a drug deal, though it was quite contrary. "abel," she mouthed out quietly, the name tasting foreign within her mouth. is that a biblical name? she wondered, but to no avail. having met him in such a strange way, she made note to remember it. even though she wasn't sure if she'd ever see him again after this night. dakota stared at him with wide, pale green eyes. she'd try to remember his face, so if she ever ran into him on the street by coincidence, she could wave. if they got to know each other, that is. and if he actually remembered her. she chewed on the inside of her cheek, thinking that she'd probably wave even if he didn't recognize her. that way, at least she would know that he was okay.
"what were you doing?"
the auburn-haired girl cringed in the slightest. she didn't want to tell him the truth; that she was making a living by stealing people's wallets. she was worried that he'd flee, leaving her in that alley. maybe she'd just not tell him anything. but then again, if she was too obvious about it, he'd definitely be suspicious of her. "its kind of a long story, but i was getting chased by this guy.." dakota said, trailing off. "he started catching up so i turned into this alley, and he gave up. i think,"
she said. at least it was a half-truth. it probably wasn't the best thing to say to smooth over his worries, but.. it'd do, hopefully. "and you? what're you doing out here?" she questioned, blinking curiously. [/blockquote][/blockquote] [Agent:2]

REASONS LIKE SEASONS, THEY CONSTANTLY CHANGE<< and the seasons of last year
-●-●-●-●-●-●-●-●-●-●-●-●-●- "its kind of a long story, but i was getting chased by this guy.." abel's eyes instantly blinked wide and his brow furrowed in confusion. he didn't speak, though, letting the girl continue on with her explanation of why she'd been in the alleyway all alone. he chewed on his bottom lip, his eyes showing his obvious puzzlement and slight bewilderment. why would some man chase some teenage girl around? after all, from what abel knew of the aurburn-haired girl so far -which wasn't actually hardly anything at all, naturally- she seemed perfectly innocent. she didn't seem like any sort of druggie or addict or thief or, god forbid, murderer. dakota seemed pleasant enough, so why had she gotten chased into an alley by some man?
then, like a flash, it came back to abel. remember where you live, he thought to himself, resuming his biting down on his bottom lip. out of all the terrible people in town, the man had probably just been another one. he'd probably been chasing dakota, trying to take her money away from her.. or harm her or something, abel decided after a moment. he probably saw the money she had and tried to steal it from her.. and then she probably refused to give it to him and ran off. then he probably chased her until she got out of his line of sight or something. slowly, the black-headed boy nodded to himself, accepting the theory.
he almost pressed the conversation, asking the girl why exactly she'd been chased. but then again, it really wasn't much of his business, was it? dakota probably wouldn't want to explain anyway, he figured. abel shuffled a few steps forward, as he'd still been standing back about two yards or so. he stopped with a few feet still inbetween him and the shorter girl, not wanting to intrude on her personal space or have her think he was a freak.
the eighteen year old opened his mouth to speak, about to ask where dakota lived and if she even lived in a house or not. but before he could get his questions out, dakota had already spoken again. "and you? what're you doing out here?" abel simply shrugged in response, his eyes quickly moving to the suddenly-interesting ground before him. he opened his mouth and closed it a couple of times, trying to form the right words before speaking outloud. after a minute, abel simply shrugged again, still refusing to look up. "i just.. had to go to the nearby convenience store. had to buy some bread and.. y'know, groceries." his voice was nonchalant, but there was obvious tension in his jaw as he talked. "i saw this little alleyway and figured it would get me to the store quickest, y'know? i mean, i'd rather get to.. the store as quick as possible so i can just get home."
abel stuffed his hands deep into the pockets of his regular, overly-worn jeans that he'd probably worn for two years. he shifted his gaze to look at his shoes instead, carefully studying the untied laces and the scuff marks. good fucking job, idiot, the boy thought to himself, starting to chew on the inside of his cheek. couldn't make it any more obvious, could you? his mind screamed at him, but he tried his best to keep his composure on the outside.

■ TICKING AWAY, THE MOMENTS THAT MAKE UP A DULL DAY
while waiting for the boy, who she recently learned was called abel, to reply to her question, she glanced towards the alley. specifically, where it opened out into the street. every couple of minutes, a group of people would saunter past - be it a lost pair of girls, or a thug who had that certain glint in his eyes. she turned her head towards the other side of the alley, looking past a dilapidated dumpster and a pile of questionable trash. it seemed that the brick sides of the buildings they were in between disappeared into nothing; simply vanished. the girl breathed in deeply, a bit of her old apprehensive fear welling up within her chest. she'd gotten used to the streets at night about a year ago, when she first started snaking through crowds and roaming the streets. initially, she was terrified of the city at night - with good reason. the newspapers merely scraped the surface of what happened when the sun went down. dakota shuddered slightly, recalling the time that she'd walked into a gang fight that had been occurring in an alley, not very unlike this one. she was sure that that was the closest she'd ever been to actually being murdered; to being the next unclaimed corpse headed off to the morgue, or the next headline. once she got enough money, she'd get out of here, to some nice place in the country where the week's headlines would be about record fishing, or something. she didn't even care how she got that money anymore.
"i saw this little alleyway and figured it would get me to the store quickest, y'know? i mean, i'd rather get to.. the store as quick as possible so i can just get home."
"ah, you must be wanting to get to that, then,"
she said, smiling halfheartedly. she didn't really want to be alone. the short girl felt that she wanted to get to know him better, and it'd be safer, after all. most people went after a lone person rather than a group, even if it was just two people. she felt compelled to go with him, although she had no idea where she was crashing tonight. could always go home.. her thoughts chimed in in a sing-song sort of way, much to her irritation. she wasn't going home. she'd rather spend the night at the community park's gazebo, or maybe even in one of those park-and-drive booths with the benches. those places were almost always taken by the time she got there, but hey, there was the possibility that she could get lucky.. though the chances were horrendously slim. "since you're going that way, and i haven't got anywhere in particular that i'm going, maybe we could walk together?" dakota's voice rose with the question. she prayed that he would agree. she stared down into the seemingly endless blackness of the alleyway, and then turned back, staring up at him with a questioning expression.
